Pennsylvania Gaming Revenue Up 8.4% in May

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s gaming earnings reached $447.8 million in May, an 8.4% rise from the same period last year.

Pennsylvania’s gambling income in May was $447.8 million (equivalent to £363.8 million / €425.4 million), up from $413.2 million in May 2021, but down 3.2% from the record $462.7 million in April of this year.

Land-based gambling remains the most favored form of wagering among consumers in the state, with retail slot machine revenue up 2.1% year-on-year to $205.7 million, and retail table game revenue up 14.7% to $88.6 million.

Sports betting income increased by 26.2% to $35 million, but retail revenue was only $2.8 million, with $32.3 million attributed to online betting. The state’s betting handle also increased by 10.3% to $493.4 million.

Valley Forge and its partner FanDuel remain the leaders in the sports betting market, generating $19.8 million in revenue from $193.4 million in bets.

Meadows’ Hollywood Casino Barstool Sportsbook came in second with $7.1 million in revenue on a $111.5 million handle, followed by Penn National’s Hollywood Casino and DraftKings, which generated $1.9 million in revenue from $34.4 million in bets.

Turning to online casino activity, internet slot machine revenue increased by 16.3% to $78.2 million, while online table game revenue also saw a modest increase of 2.8% to $32.3 million, and online poker revenue increased by 8.0% to $2.8 million.

Penn National’s Hollywood Casino leads the way in online gambling, with $45 million in revenue.

A $5 million take surpassed the $26.9 million generated by the Rivers Casino Philadelphia, followed by the Valley Forge Casino Resort at $21.2 million.

In other areas, video gaming terminal income increased by 1.8% to $3.7 million, but fantasy sports income decreased by 20.7% to $1.6 million, making it the only segment of the Pennsylvania market that didn’t experience growth in May.
