ACMA Cracks Down on Illegal Online Gambling Sites in Australia

Internet service providers in Australia have been directed to restrict access to a wider range of online gambling and wagering platforms. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) asserts that these websites, which focus on Australian users, are functioning unlawfully.

Among the sites recently added to a blacklist are Pokies Online Casino, AU Online Casino, CasinoAus, Australian Casino Sites, Ninja Spins, and Pokies Parlour. The ACMA scrutinized these websites and concluded that they were in breach of the Interactive Gambling Act of 2001.

Since the ACMA commenced its efforts to block such websites in 2019, more than 400 have been deactivated. Furthermore, since the implementation of more stringent legislation targeting illicit offshore gambling in 2017, over 160 unlawful services have withdrawn from the Australian market.

The ACMA cautions Australians that the mere appearance of legitimacy of a website does not guarantee its authenticity. They advise consumers to exercise vigilance with sites lacking consumer safeguards, as they face the potential for financial loss.

Reportedly, more than one out of every ten Australians have engaged in online wagering within the past half-year. This represents a concerning increase from eight percent in the year 2020, illustrating the escalating magnitude of this issue in Australia.
